Catch up here: Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
It wasn’t a surprise that your college finished out the regular season on top. Your college was known across the country for its sports programs.
It didn’t surprise you when Bucky showed up with a bright cocky smile the day after the last away game. “Ooooh Doodle!” He said in a sing-song voice.
You looked over your shoulder setting the paint brush down, raising an eyebrow at him, “yeeees Bucky?” You matched his tone perfectly. With all the away games you haven’t seen him since the weekend, you have made some decent progress on the painting of him. You were giddy to show him what you completed in his absence.
“Guess who scored a date with Mandy, the head cheerleader?” He was beaming. Your heart sank momentarily, your facial expression dropping slightly before you composed yourself and gave him your best dazzling smile.
“I’m not sure Buck, I’ve always been terrible at guessing games,” you murmured, trying to hide the discontent in your voice as you looked back at the canvas to compose yourself. He didn’t seem to pick up on your change in mood.
“Ah come on Doodle, I’ll give you a hint. He’s charming, on the hockey team and incredibly sexy,” he sounded so cock sure.
You turned to face him and tapped the end of the brush on your lip, feigning that you were deep in thought and then a bright smile split across your face.
“Oh! I know who it is,” you said excitedly. “Sam!” You faked enthusiasm before turning back to the painting but not before catching his face drop for a moment.
“Pfft, he’s about as charming as an out of tune piano,” Bucky deflected. “Come on Doodle, it’s easy.”
“They’re easy huh?” You mused. “So must be you then,” you said flatly without missing a beat. He laughed awkwardly behind you.
“Uh, yeah it’s me,” his cocksure attitude was gone and he sounded a little deflated.
“That’s nice Buck, have fun,” you said quietly.
“It’s not until tomorrow night,” he said, “I wanted to come hang out with you tonight,” your heart clenched and you bit your knuckle to stop the pang of hurt that threatened to crush you, you didn’t trust your voice at the moment so you just nodded.
“How much of the painting have you done?” He asked quickly, changing the topic. You were grateful. “Last time I saw it you just had some base colours on.”
You had the puck almost done, you were painting as if the puck was being shot at the person viewing it. Slightly different from your original idea, but you liked how it was turning out. Bucky was now standing next to you and you could smell the deep woody and amber tones of his cologne. He always smelled good, even after playing a game or practice. It was something you appreciated about him, Thor would smell like a locker room after practice. It was awful.
You quickly focused back on the canvas and not how much you wanted to stick your nose into the crook of Bucky’s throat and inhale the heady scent he wore. This little crush was getting out of hand, you needed to squash it quickly.
“That looks amazing, Doodle,” Bucky said in awe as he looked at the painting. “How do you make it seem so real?”
“Practice, and a little luck,” you said with a shrug. Bucky moved out of the way when you picked the brush up and started to work on it again. “The inspiration was also a big help,” you looked over your shoulder at him and winked. He gave you a dazzling smile back. “What are you doing today?” He had pulled some books and notes out on the table and was staring down at them.
“I’m studying for my astronomy final,” he said, his tongue caught between his teeth. His arm crossed over his chest and the other hand held his chin as he looked down at his notes.
“Mind if I put some music on?” He hummed and you clicked the play button and let the music wash over you. You got to work, getting lost in the music and the brush strokes.
The soft notes of Work Song by Hozier played soothingly over the speaker and you hummed softly along to the song and swayed gently back and forth. You jumped when you felt Bucky’s hand cup your shoulder and slide down your arm clasping your hand in his.
“Can’t have a pretty thing like you dancing by herself,” he said softly. He pulled you to him and started to sway you two gently to the beat. Your heart was racing a million miles a minute, your cheeks were a bright shade of red as you hid your face against his firm chest.
He moved you two effortlessly, he guided you in a small sway. He was smiling down at the top of your head as you leaned your cheek to his chest. His hand held the small of your back gently to him.
You couldn’t believe this was happening, he was dancing with you randomly. It was completely out of the blue, but you couldn’t bring yourself to complain. He was firm and warm under your touch. He held like you were as fragile as blown glass, his touch feather light and respectful. You usually hated dancing but something about this moment felt right.
As the song came to close and Bucky took a step back from you, you started to miss the contact as quickly as you lost it. He was smiling down at you and kissed you knuckles of the hand he had been holding at the time. “Thank you for the dance m’lady,” he tipped his chin and gave you a devilish smile. You couldn’t find words to express who you felt at the moment.
“Thank you kind sir,” you stuttered back. He laughed his beautiful rich as chocolate laugh and made his way back to his studying and you went back to your painting feeling lighter than before. The pit in your stomach growing deeper, you could still feel his warm hand on your waist and the way he held you so carefully.
“Loki I don’t know what I’m going to do,” you whined as you draped over his lap dramatically. You had texted him “code red” before you left the art studio, Bucky had offered to drop you off at your apartment but you declined like you usually did. Code red meaning ‘I need you please come get me.’ Which he did without hesitation.
“Darling you’re being a little dramatic,” he ran his fingers through your hair trying to sooth your nerves.
“Loki, I’m not being dramatic. We had this whole conversation about just being friends and spending time together without him waiting to get me in bed,” you exclaimed.
“Which he probably still does,” Loki added, you glared at him.
“Not the point, how can that conversation mean anything if I can’t even hold myself to it,” you said in an exasperated tone. “Loki, he danced with me, out of the blue. Just took my hand and danced with me,” you peaked up at Loki who was running his long fingers through your hair, he had an unreadable expression. “Who does that nowadays, it’s something my grandpa would do with nana.”
“Little brother,” Hela’s sing-song voice called as she poked her head into the room. “Oh hello sweetling! I didn’t know you were visiting,” she smiled at you. You had always liked Helena, she was always nice to you. She gave Loki and Thor shit when we were teens and they were acting like typical teenage boys, insensitive and immature. She looked you over, draped over Loki’s lap, your arm thrown over your eyes. You looked miserable, she entered the room further and sat down on the edge of Loki’s bed and gently touched your shoulder.
“What’s the matter sweetling,” she asked soothingly.
“Nothing Hela, stupid feelings and a crush a stupid boy,” you whined. She laughed at that.
“Men tend to be like that, this is why I like women,” she chuckled. “Seriously sweetling, it can’t be that bad, who is it?” She asked softly. Her eyes drifted to Loki for a moment and he made a face.
“Bucky Barnes,” you groaned. Hela’s eyes widened and she groaned.
“You’re telling me you’re upset over that overgrown toddler on skates?” She asked with a raised eyebrow, you looked at her, god she was so pretty. You nodded and sighed heavily.
“I know, I know. He’s just so.... Ugh.” Loki chuckled and Hela glared at him. She grabbed your hand and rubbed her thumb over your knuckles soothingly.
“You know a couple years back he tried asking me out. I rejected him. He called me a stuck up bitch,” she said, you raised your arm off your eyes and looked at her. “He wouldn’t even let me tell him I had no interest in men, especially younger men.” You nodded and that was what Loki meant when he was rude to Hela. “He later saw me with Val on a date. He felt like an idiot and apologised for how he acted.”
“He did?” Loki asked, he sounded surprised. Hela nodded.
“He learned his lesson. Learned a few things too. From my understanding he’s not as pushy as he used to be,” Hela added. “Shame what happened with his girlfriend and her sudden departure to Alaska. He was apparently a lot different when she was here. She broke his heart. It doesn’t excuse his behaviour but it definitely gives perspective.”
“You know Nat mentioned that he had a long term relationship that suddenly ended,” you said back, thinking back.
“Val knew her better than I ever did, she apparently just packed up and left. No explanation, not warning. She was just gone. Barnes was devastated,” Hela said thoughtfully.
“Huh, well that definitely adds perspective,” you agreed.
“It doesn’t excuse his behaviour though,” Loki reiterated. You and Hela nodded in agreement.
“What should I do?” You asked Loki after Hela left. He sighed and looked down at you, eyes swimming with uncertainty.
“I’m not sure darling, if you told him what do you think would happen?” Loki asked softly.
“He would probably pick up on trying to sleep with me again,” you groaned.
You ended up spending the night at Loki’s house with him, falling asleep on his bed.
“You know, it's a good thing you don’t share a bed with anyone,” Loki shoved you away from the centre of the bed. “You’re a fucking bed hog,” you couldn’t help but laugh at his groggy disgruntled voice.
“Apologies Loki,” you laughed as he huffed.
“Bull shit,” he exclaimed while standing up and going into his ensuite bathroom. You stood and leaned against the door frame while Loki pulled a brush through his hair and did his skin care routine. “Do you want me to bring you home so you can change and stuff?
“I would appreciate it,” you smiled at him.
“Morning Wands,” you called as you came through the front door, Loki right behind you, he grabbed your coat and hung it up as you pulled it off.
“In here,” she called out as the toaster popped. You and Loki walked into the kitchen together. “Morning Loki,” she gave him a dazzling smile, which he returned.
“I’m making cinnamon toast and eggs, hungry?” She asked.
“I’d love some, I’m going to grab a quick shower and change.”
“Princessa!” Peitro wrapped you in a hug tightly as he walked behind you and snagged a piece of toast off your plate.
“Get your own,” you batted his hand away.
“But I want yours,” he teased. You heard Wanda and Loki chuckle at you both.
“I have a plate for you too, stop stealing hers,” Wanda ushered him over.
“What plans do you have today?” Wanda asked as she sat down next to you. You looked to Loki, it was his turn to plan the Saturday plans.
“The new book I’ve been waiting on is finally here so we have to stop by the bookstore in town,” Loki said, “then I think we’ll drive up the coast, we need pictures for our photography class.” You smiled at him, so thoughtful. “Then maybe some dinner and a stroll through the park,” he finished.
“God Loki you’re making me look like a terrible boyfriend,” Pietro whined, you snorted into your juice and leaned back laughing loudly.
“Maybe you should take notes,” Loki teased. You and Wanda were laughing together. Loki was an incredibly thoughtful friend. That’s why you adored him so much. But that’s where it ended. You two were the best of friends and that was where the line was drawn and there was never a need to cross it. It took time for people to understand your friendship and the boundaries you two had in place.
“Sounds like a fun day,” Wanda said thoughtfully.
“What about you Wands? Vis is still abroad isn’t he?” She nodded at your question.
“I’m going to practise with Pietro, it’s a nice day to be out in the sun,” she answered. “Vis gets back next week.”
“I had fun today,” you said softly as you and Loki walked through the park after having supper at a sweet little Mexican restaurant. Loki had his hand on the small of your back guiding you and keeping you close.
“I did too,” he hummed. You two walked around a little more, taking a seat on a bench to watch the setting sun. You looked out over the green space and saw some couples sitting in the grass relaxing. One couple caught your attention.
“Is that bucky?” You said quietly, tipping your head in his direction. Loki squinted and nodded.
Bucky was sitting a little ways away leaning back on his hands. Mandy sat next to him completely ignoring him. Something twisted in your heart as you looked at him looking up at the sky and she was scrolling her phone. Loki rubbed your shoulder soothingly. Drawn back to him you gave Loki a sad smile.
“She probably just wants to sleep with him,” Loki whispered. You nodded in agreement.
“He likes space a lot. He’s talking to her and she is not even pretending to listen,” it broke your heart. Soon his date leaned over and they got up from their spot. He trailed behind her as they waltzed across the green space toward Bucky’s truck. You watched him follow after her like some love sick puppy.
But then for a brief moment his eyes connected with yours. His eyes narrowed in on you and he paused for the briefest moment as he looked at you across the field. You couldn’t place the look in his eyes, but it was something akin to longing, maybe you couldn’t be sure. As soon as it started it ended and Bucky was gone with Mandy into his truck.
“Darling,” Loki’s smooth voice filled your ears and you looked at him. “You okay?” You nodded and sighed.
“I think so,” you mumbled while shaking your head to clear it.
You didn’t see much of Bucky over the next few days, practice and studying seemed to completely take over his days. He would text you little updates, ask how your day was going, remind you to drink and eat snacks. Your phone going off startled you out of the trance you were in.
It was a FaceTime request from Bucky. You slide the answer button and gaze at him with a quizzical look. “Hello,” you chuckled, propping the phone on the easel.
“Hey doodle,” his hair was wet and he was shirtless, you tried to not look at his shoulders. “Miss me?” He wiggled his eyebrows at you.
“Like a toothache Bucky,” you mused. Your shirt rode up as you stretched your arm to reach up on the canvas. Your phone left you a perfect anglee for Bucky’s eyes to follow the now revealed skin. You didn’t catch him licking his lips at you.
“I’m hurt doodle,” he feigned hurt and clutched his hand over his heart being dramatic which made you laugh. There was a sudden knock on the art studio door, you looked over your shoulder and then back at the phone. Bucky was trying really hard to not look suspicious.
“What did you do?” You asked as you grabbed the phone and opened the door, you looked down and he shrugged. Opening the door you were greeted by a delivery driver. You raised an eyebrow and squinted at him.
“Delivery for Doodle?” The driver said, he looked completely over the day and didn’t bat an eye at the nickname.
“I didn’t order,” you looked down at your phone and were met with Bucky’s shit eating grin. “You cheeky bastard,” you accused him. “Thank you,” you took the food and sat down at the table in the art room.
“Thanks Bucky,” you were touched. He had ordered your favourite, everything completely how you liked it. You had only ever ordered this once in his presence, weeks ago. He remembered. “You even remember the extra sauce,” you could feel tears well up in your eyes from how sweet of a gesture it was. You quickly rubbed the tears away and smiled at him.
Everyone in your life had been so busy you barely spoke to them, Bucky had been the most consistent person by far. You didn’t blame the others, you had barely kept in touch being swapped with final projects and finals. Everyone was just busy. The fact he took the time to send you food, made your heart soar.
“I figured we could eat together,” Bucky said as he sat up and positioned the phone so his hands were free and you could see his full torso and face. You almost choked on air seeing him. He was fucking hot, you stoped the that train of thought immediately and looked at his face and not his peaks or squishy tummy. He was a big dude, firm but soft looking. You wanted to run your fingers over his torso.
“I’d like that,” you were impressed with how composed you sounded in that moment.
“How’s the projects going?” He asked. You shrugged and sighed.
“They're going. I’m almost done with three of them and I finished the last one this afternoon,” he nodded. Silence fell over you two again but it wasn’t uncomfortable. That was something you noticed shortly after his visits to art studios became more frequent, silence with him was comfortable and you never felt the innate urge to fill it. “How’s studying?”
“Good, the practicals will be easy. I hate written exams,” Bucky was a kinesiology major, doing astrology classes for electives. What surprised you early on was that he was actually doing well in classes. It made you question those Reddit comments you read saying he cared little for academics. He wasn’t a valedictorian or anything but he was passing with 3.1 GPA overall. You weren’t surprised when he mentioned he wasn't interested in the arts, and that he only did the two mandatory English classes.
“You got this,” you said to him with a smile.
“So do you,” he gave you a dazzling smile back. “I'm sorry I haven’t been coming to visit,” he said quietly.
“It’s okay, we’re all busy right now. I haven’t seen Nat in 4 days, she was hauled up in the dance studio getting ready for her practicals and the final performance,” you shrugged, the performance arts program did a big show at the end of exams the whole campus was invited to purchase tickets for. The funds raised went toward funding future projects. You had your ticket, and an extra because Loki had bought his and forgot to tell you.
“She hasn’t been at practice either, Barton has been insufferable,” Bucky said with a mock exasperated sigh.
“I’m not surprised,” you chuckled and smiled at Bucky, he admired the way the corner of your eyes crinkle when you smile like that.
“You’re still coming Friday?” Bucky asked.
“Of course,” you nodded. “Actually I have a question to ask you,” he looked at you attentively and waited. “I have an extra ticket to the performing arts final show after exams, did you want to come with me?” You didn’t build your hopes so high that he would say yes. “If you don…”
“Yeah, love too Doodle,” he cut you off. Your face lights up with a bright smile.
“Awesome,” you cheered excitedly, you wouldn’t soon forget the beautiful smile that graced his face, you both looked into each other for a moment, smiles morning one another. You didn’t want to look away from him, his eyes snapped from yours at the sound of a crash from another room and some yelling.
“Dammit Scott,” Bucky groaned and looked at you apologetically. “Gotta go Doodle, I’m going to try and swing by the art room tomorrow.”
“Bye Bucky,” you waved at him as he waved the call ended. You saT back in the chair for a moment before giving up for the night and packing up to go home.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2
“I can’t do this,” You groaned looking down at the few sketches you’ve managed to produce since you refused to step foot back into the hockey arena again. You could feel the pit you were falling into already growing, and it was all because of a certain fluffy haired, sea-blue eyed hockey player.
“You can do this and you will do this darling,” Loki drawled out as he spoke with a hint of annoyance. He was laying down with his leg dangled off the side of the fountain in the student commons, an open area full of windows and natural light. His other leg was propped up and bent at the knee which you were using as a back rest. You side eyed him begrudgingly.
“This is awful,” you leaned your head back against his knee.
“Well don’t look now, but awful just entered the commons,” you followed Loki’s gaze and noticed Barnes and a couple of the other players entering the area. A couple girls were making their way over to them as they placed their bags down and sat at a bar table. Barnes' eyes swept the commons and caught your gaze, he stopped and squinted and you looked down instantly.
He nudged Wilson with his elbow, who made an annoyed noise, “what Bucky?” Bucky tipped his chin in your direction, Wilson’s eyes followed and he stared for a couple seconds. “Wait, is that the girl from the rink?” Bucky nodded, thinking the same thing. He couldn’t get your eyes out of his head, they were so expressive from the few glimpses he had of them. “She’s hanging out with Odinson’s brother,” the younger Odinson was usually present at the parties his brother threw but rarely participated in anything. Usually hiding away in a corner or in his room reading.
“I think so,” Bucky stood and threw his bag over his shoulder.
“Where are you going?” Wilson hissed.
“To say hello,” Bucky gave him his dazzling smile.
Loki noticed Barnes coming toward you two before you did, your head was down as you focused on the drawing you were working on, “trouble is heading our direction,” Loki said lowly, you looked up without lifting your head and saw Barnes striding in your direction. You swallowed thickly and kept your head down, he might just be walking in this direction for another reason. He couldn’t pick you out in a crowd, impossible, he only saw you twice.
“Excuse me,” your dreams were dashed as you saw the toes of his shoes and his frame created a shadow over your sketchbook. “I couldn’t help but notice you were at the rink a week ago,” he said, “and I know every pretty girl that hangs out there, can’t say I know you,” he said with an air of arrogance. You scoffed at him, side eyeing Loki who had his book covering his mouth, but you could feel the slight tremble from his contained amusement.
“I think you’re mistaken,” you said in a hushed tone.
“I don’t think so, you have the same hair and,” his hand snatched the sketch book from you. “Sketch book,” you jumped startled at the sudden invasion of privacy.
“Hey give that back,” you snapped harshly. Reaching to take the book back, he kept it from your reach easily. You stood now and pushed his outstretched hand out of the way to grab the book from his other hand. Your chest pressed up against his as you reached desperately for the sketchbook. “I said give it back.”
“Ah baby, don’t be like that,” your nose scrunched up and you narrowed your eyes at him, he had a playful expression on his face and his eyes were gleaming with mischief as he gazed down at you.
“I’m not your baby,” you said sternly. “And give me my sketchbook back please, now.” You seethed. His eyes flicked to you for a moment before flicking to the open drawing.
“You know that certainly looks like me, I know I have admirers. But no one has ever drawn me,” he mused as he continued to keep the book from your grasp. You looked at Loki who was already sitting up and standing.
“Give it back to her Barnes,” Loki's tone was tense, and stern. “She asked you nicely.”
Barnes' eyes snapped from the book to Loki in an instant and he turned to fully face Loki. They stood at the same height, but Barnes was stockier. “What are you gonna do about it Odinson,” Barnes taunted.
“Don’t be a child. You wouldn’t want to cause a scene,” Loki said in a tone with underlying intent. “You don’t need the coach to hear about another incident,” Loki said knowingly. You watched the tense exchange between the two men with wide eyes, the tension palpable. A few more tense seconds and Barnes relented, lifting his hands up in mock surrender.
“Whatever prick,” Barnes spat at Loki. “You ever want to have some real fun, you know where to find me sugar” he winked and handed the sketch book to Loki and looked at you once more, his eyes roving over your body. Your eyes widened at his choice of words, taken slightly back by how hostile he became when Loki intervened.
Loki handed you back your sketchbook before putting a hand on your back and leading you the opposite direction of Barnes, you looked over your shoulder quickly before picking up the pace to match Loki.
Once sufficiently far away from the commons you stopped and looked up at Loki.
“What was that?” You asked. You know Loki knew Bucky, hell you’d seen him at Thor’s parties before. Usually you would be in Loki's room with him when you attended them, disliking them as much as he did.
“Barnes being Barnes,” Loki said with a slightly annoyed tone. “He’s got a rap sheet. One more complaint or misbehavior and he’s benched for the rest of the season,” Loki stated. “That doesn’t look great for an NHL prospect.” You nodded as you listened to him speak.
“Thank you,” you said softly as you hugged your sketch pad to your chest.
“It’s no problem darling,” he said back sweetly. “Now, you need to get back to the rink and get your project together.” You huffed and groaned.
“You had to ruin it,” you whined and threw your head back. “I’ll go with Nat to the next practice,” you relented and stared up at Loki.
Loki smiled and patted the top of your head “perfect darling.” You glared at him for a moment before shaking your head.
~The next day~
You sighed as Nat dragged you to the rink, making sure you had the appropriate clothing on this time so you couldn’t duck out randomly.
“This is the worst,” you groaned as you sunk into the hard plastic seats and covered your face with your hands.
“Stop whining, it’s fine,” Nat sat next to you and smiled at Clint who skated up to the glass. He waved at her and you before skating backwards, showing off. Nat was like a giggly school girl as she watched him. You rolled your eyes and smirked at her.
You propped your sketch pad on the arm of the seat and hunched over to draw. Your eyes trained on the skates as the players drifted by. The movement of the blades over the ice was incredible. You had stayed up and researched how the skating part actually worked, “Nat? Did you know the reason they glide like that?” You said absently as you focused on the sketch you're doing. She hummed in acknowledgment, “the blade of skate melts a very thin layer of the surface ice and they glide on the water from the melt,” you muttered.
“Interesting, no I didn’t,” Nat said back as she watched her man snipe a puck into the net. You were watching as well, sketching the stick as he flicked it effortlessly and the puck soaring through the air. Silence fell over you two once again as you focused on the paper before you.
That silence was quickly ruined by someone slamming into the boards in front of you and you yelped in surprise. You squinted at the body in front of you and then glared at him. Barnes. He was saying something but you couldn’t quite hear him, pointing to your ear and then shrugging to indicate you couldn’t hear him. He made some obscene gestures before skating away. You rolled your eyes and went back to drawing once again.
Then someone else banged on the glass making it shake. You looked up and glared, but this time it wasn’t Barnes, his teammate, “Wilson,” Nat said as you stared at him.
Wilson was pointing toward the center of the rink where Barnes was skating effortlessly, moving beautifully on the ice. He moved the puck back and forth quickly causing the defenceman to stumble and he scored on the net. He lifted his hand up in the air and spun on one foot. He pointed his gloved hands at you, you rolled your eyes in response.
As much as you hated to admit it, Barnes' movement was too captivating to not want to draw. “He might be a prick, but damn he can skate,” Nat voiced your thoughts.
“He’s handsome too,” you regretted the words the second they spilled out. Nat turned her head and raised her brow at you, a sly smile on her lips. “No, I don’t mean I think he’s handsome. He’s just you know, got that natural handsomeness to him,” you stammered. “Oh god, I’m making it worse,” you buried your face in your hands. Nat laughed a deep bellied laugh while patting your shoulder.
“No, you’re right. He’s handsome. And he knows it. That makes it worse,” Nat said, her tone a little sour. You nodded in agreement, he then flew past you two, you both rolled your eyes.
Practice ended and you followed Nat to the wait for Clint. She asked you to join them for pizza after practice. Standing in a hallway that leads to the locker room you were showing her what you drew that night.
“Ah, my number one admirer,” his voice rang out, you wanted the floor to swallow you whole. “Did you get my good side,” he asked. You rolled your eyes at him for what felt like the millionth time tonight.
“You only have good sides,” a whiny voice said and you cringed. Nat mirroring your expression but being much more subtle you’re sure.
“Hey babe,” Clint said as he wrapped his arm around Nat and kissed her temple. “Barnes,” he tipped his head toward his teammate.
“Barton,” Barnes said back, “you gonna introduce me to your friend?”
“Uh, she’s Nat's friend,” Clint said.
You shook your head and dismissed Clint with a smile.
“My name is…”
“I like Bunny,” Barnes cut you off suddenly. “I don’t do names for pretty ladies,” he stated. The girl hanging off his arm made a disgruntled noise and looked taken back by his open flirtation while she was right there. You felt a little bad for her.
“Nuh uh, I’m not one of those puck bunnies,” your eyes flicked to the girl hanging off his arm apologetically.
“Never said you were Sketch,” you scrunch your nose at the nickname.
“Original,” you sassed.
“I’ll figure one out,” he affirmed, you crossed your arms over your chest and shook your head.
“God you’re insufferable,” you muttered, glowering at him.
“Is he always like that?” You asked as you sat down across from Nat and Clint in the booth at the pizza place. It was a local spot, well loved by the students that populated the town.
“Barnes?” Clint as he took a bite of his pizza, you nodded.
“Yeah, he’s all talk. He’s practically harmless,” you raised an eyebrow at Clint. “Off the ice, he’s hell on it.” You nodded. “So what’s the project you’re working on?” He asked.
“Movement, human movement. My art prof has a vendetta against me so I’m trying to go outside the box. Pietro offered to let me do the project on him at the track. But Prof. Grace would just say I made the safe choice,” I groaned. “And football season is over so I couldn’t do it on Thor.” Clint was familiar with Peitro and Wanda since they hung around Nat, same as Thor since the sports teams tended to run in the same circles outside games.
“Right, your roommates,” he nodded. You lived with Wanda and Pietro since the start of university, being you were good friends with them. You had met Nat your first year and subsequently met Clint when they started dated that same year. “You’re friends with Thor's brother aren’t you?” You nodded and smiled.
“Yeah, best friends since middle school,” you nodded. “So by extension I’ve known Thor and Hela since then as well,” you added afterwards.
“Why did you pick hockey?” You shrugged.
“Nat suggested I come and watch a practice. You guys move so fluidly on the ice it was easy to draw,” you answered simply, eating another piece of pizza. “And frustratingly Barnes is incredibly talented and moves beautifully, I might have to ask him if I can make him my focus,” you groaned and rubbed your temples. “But he’s insufferable.”
Clint let out a loud laugh at that and nodded, “he can be. He’s honestly not that bad once you can get past the jock personality.” You rolled your eyes.
“That’s like saying cocaine isn’t bad once you get past the cocaine,” you laughed. “I’m pretty sure the jock personality is just him.”
“Eh, he’s cocky, but he’s earned it. He’s pretty damn good,” Clint said.
The rest of the evening passed quickly as conversation drifted from the brunette that had been clouding your thoughts.
“Thanks for the lift,” you waved as Clint and Nat drove away. You quickly climbed the steps to your flat and entered.
“Wanda, Pietro?” You called as you dropped your keys in the bowl at the entrance.
“Living room princessa,” Pietro called sweetly.
“What’s you guys watching?” You asked as you walked into the living, stripping your jacket off.
“Silent hill,” Wanda answered.
“The one with Kit Harington?” She nodded, you smiled and joined them on the couch.
“How was practice?” Wanda asked softly.
“It was good, I’m going to ask Barnes if I make him the focus. And I think a bullet in the thigh would be easier to deal with than him,” you sighed leaning your head back against the couch. “I was considering asking Loki to come with me when I asked him. But I don’t think that’s a good idea anymore,” you muttered.
“Why's that?” Pietro asked.
“They seem to have some kinda beef,” you shrugged. “He wouldn’t get into it,” you said. “Bucky’s a player, Loki isn’t a fan of that. And he’s been around him at parties. He’s apparently one incident away from being benched for the season.” Pietro seemed to nod knowingly.
“I’m not surprised, he’s a bit hot headed. Gotten into a few fights with people. Usually with good intentions though. Seen him knock a dude out flat on his ass for trying to drug a girl at a party. He also tends to back-talk instructors,” Pietro said. “He doesn’t seem like a bad dude. A little cocky and a bit of a flirt. Seems harmless enough.” You nodded at Pietro’s explanation and watched the rest of the movie with them in silence.
You texted Loki to ask why he didn’t like Bucky. Curiosity getting the better of you. His answer came back in a couple short paragraphs.
He seems like trouble.
Like he can’t be stable for one week.
He looks down on the arts pretty openly as well. Well at least English.
And he was rude to Helena as well a couple times.
You nodded as you read the series of texts. Loki was pretty traditional and he was never a fan of bouncing from one girl to another. Bucky was very open about doing that.
He also gets pretty obnoxious at parties.
He’s had a few scandals as well. Skipping out on one girl to be with another. Bit of a womanizer.
Why?
You quickly typed back you were curious because he was mostly likely going to be the focus for your project.
I figured he would. Guys a prick but he’s good at what he does.
Everyone said that. From what you’ve seen he was pretty good at hockey, not that you could judge that very well. But there was more to life than a sport. You typed a quick thanks back and wished Loki a goodnight.
Wanda and Pietro both went to bed and you stayed curled up on the couch. You decided to do some research yourself. Typing Bucky’s name into the search engine, his stats came up, and few hockey related awards he’s won. Some articles about how good of a prospect he was. His draft position whatever that meant. Him and Steve were drafted together from what you could tell.
Then you saw a Reddit thread from your school's Reddit talking about him, the fights he’s been in, his lack of care for academics and some people fighting about him being their boyfriend and how he was a cheating piece of shit. He apparently got into an altercation with someone on the Polo team and he and the captain of your school's rival hockey team got into a pretty bad fight after a game last year.
Your eyes widened as you read about the fight Pietro mentioned, he was lucky the guy's family didn’t press charges from how badly Bucky beat him. Part of you knew that behavior wasn’t acceptable, but a smaller needy part of you found it insanely hot how far he went to protect the girl the dude tried to drug. You shook your head and closed the search and went to bed. You would ask him tomorrow after practice, which Nat was dragging you too again.

You didn’t see Barnes the next day, which wasn’t surprising, it was Friday night after a win so celebration extended into the start of the weekend. Saturday was much the same, you toiled away in the art room in front of a large sketch pad trying to get something together while your canvas dried.
You also had a small piece you were working on for a gallery wall you were doing for a local gallery that was happening once the semester ended. So your plate was full and adding the insistent nagging from your brain to find Barnes, your patience was wearing thin.
You threw the paint brush at the sink, it sailed in a smooth arche before clattering in the paint covered sink. You ran your hands over your face and groaned as you leaned forward, elbows planted in the table. Your mind is running amuck and making you lose patience.
“Doodle,” the new brush you were holding snapped in your tense grip as you looked up, startled. Barnes was standing at the door holding a bag that smelled delicious and your stomach growled. You may have forgotten to take a break and eat.
“Barnes,” you said, your tone tense. His eyebrow quirked up as he walked in and placed the bag down a few feet away.
“Are you okay,” your hand kinda hurt from snapping the brush a moment ago, and your head was killing you with a raging headache. Which might be because you haven’t eaten in a while or because you were thirsty. You took a deep breath and nodded.
“Yeah, just a little stressed,” you answered. The smell of the food in the bag makes your mouth water and your stomach twist in an uncomfortable way. “What can I do for you?”
“You weren’t at practice all weekend. Nat said you were hauled up in the art room,” he said nonchalantly, you just stared at him. “And I figured I would stop by and check on my favourite girl,” he said confidently, and you rolled your eyes in response. Your stomach decided that moment was the best time to make its presence known and grumbled loudly. Your cheeks immediately darkened in embarrassment.
“And she said you most likely didn’t eat,” the look on his face caught you off guard, he had a look of genuine concern etched on his features. “She knows you well,” he mused, his tongue poked between his teeth as he winked at you. You leaned back against your chair and extended your hand and gestured to the chair across from you, prompting him to sit. He took a seat across from you and smiled. “I hope you like burgers,” he said as he pulled the bag over.
“I don’t mind them, are they from Gus’s?” You asked, he nodded.
“I wasn’t sure what you drank so I got water,” he added, pulling a couple water bottles out of his gym bag. You smiled and chuckled a little at how thoughtful he was being.
“Waters fine,” you accepted the bottle and cracked it open and drank half it one go. He eyed you suspiciously and you gulped down hard. “I get lost in what I’m doing and sometimes forget to eat or drink,” you mumbled under his intense gaze.
“That’s not healthy,” he muttered, pulling out a burger and handing it to you. You accepted and opened it up, taking a bite and biting back the moan you almost let out.
“I know, but when I’m in the zone. I just don’t realise how much time passes,” you said softly, he nodded and you two ate the food in a comfortable silence.
“Thank you,” you said as you threw out the garbage and sat back down.
“No problem, can’t let ya starve,” he chuckled and rubbed his chin in his hand. “What’s ya working on?” He asked and looked at the few pieces shattered behind you and a shadow box a few feet away from you.
“Uh, a project for an art exhibit once schools out,” you answered.
“Mind if I work on some homework? It’s quieter here than my house,” you raised an eyebrow at him, that was unexpected. “What?” he asked.
“Nothing, don’t mind me,” you said as you looked down to work on the piece for the shadow box. Your eyes drifted up every now and then as you observed him working on what looked to be some kind of science homework.
His eyes wandered over your frame every now and then as he took in your look of complete concentration as you worked with a small piece of clay. He couldn’t help but appreciate the dedication you had toward your craft.
“What are you working on?” You asked after some time.
“Science homework,” he gave you a cheeky smile. You gave him a deadpan expression. “It’s space stuff,” he answered.
“What about space stuff?” You asked, genuine curiosity laced your tone.
“I’m learning about stars,” he tilted the book he was reading, it was open to a diagram of a star.
“Oh neat!” You took a closer look at the diagrams and then looked back at him. He was rubbing his neck with a sheepish look on his face. “I did a project a couple years ago on Saturn,” you pulled your phone out and showed him a picture.
“Wow, you did a fantastic job,” he took your phone for a moment to get a closer look at it. “Wait, that looks familiar,” he looked up at you again. “That looks like the one in the observatory.”
“That’s because it is,” you chuckled. His eyes widened a little and his smile broadened.
“I made out with a girl right next to it,” he chuckled and your smile dropped and you busied yourself with another piece of clay.
“That’s great,” you forced out through the firm line your mouth was now set in.
“Why do you do that?” He asked suddenly, noticing your immediate change in demeanour. You looked up and your eyes narrowed at him.
“Do what?”
“That? Get all closed off when I say something you don’t like,” he asked.
“Because I really didn’t need to know you made out with a girl next to my art piece,” you stated. “I was told if I have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
“I’m not a child, I can handle criticism,” he defended.
“That’s not the point. Have you ever once sat down and just chatted with a girl without the expectation of sex afterwards?” You asked, your tone very genuine. He sat back in his chair and looked anywhere but your face.
“No. Not in a long time,” his answer caught you guard. You were expecting some snide comment or a lie. When you looked at his face, he looked completely sincere. You took a deep breath knowing the answer to the question you were about to ask.
“Is that why you’re here now?” You didn’t recognize the voice that asked the question. It was soft and meek, nothing like your usual cadence. He didn’t answer right away, and based on the look on his face he didn’t really know what to say or how to answer.
“Honestly,” he took a deep breath and looked at his hands. “Probably. Maybe. I don’t know. At first definitely. The first time I spoke to you it was. But I don’t know,” his rambling gave away how honest he was being. “I still want to,” he paused, “to still sleep with you. I also want to hang out with you. And get to know you.”
You couldn’t help the slight upturn of your lip as you released a long inhale, “thank you for being honest.”
“I might be a prick. But at least I’m an honest one,” he tried to joke. His smile dropped when you didn’t laugh. “So where does that leave us now?”
“I don’t know Barnes. I don’t want to sleep with you. But I don’t want you to take that as a challenge to get me to sleep with you. If you truly want to be friends, and we get to know one another with no ulterior motives, then we can do that,” you didn’t want to sugar coat it. You also didn’t have the balls to admit you had a tiny crush on him because that would go straight to his dick and this conversation would be pointless.
“Well to start you could start calling me Bucky, Barnes is so detached,” he gave you a small smile.
“Well that was the point,” you chuckled. “But okay, Bucky.” His smile grew larger and he pumped his fist in the air.
“I’m still calling you Doodle though,” he said, his tone serious as he stared at you.
“That’s fine, I guess,” you chuckled while rolling your eyes at him.
“So how much of my piece is finished?” He asked, you couldn’t help but laugh and pointed over your shoulder to the large canvas behind you. “That’s empty.”
“I know. I have to get some practice sketches done first before I paint on the big canvas,” you decided to not mention the two you ruined.
“Can I see the practice sketches?” He asked hopefully.
“Sure,” you relented and passed the sketch pad over and watched him look at it.
“How do you do that?” He asked, passing it back a moment later.
“Draw?” You raised an eyebrow at him. He nodded. “I just do, it takes a lot of practice and effort. I could ask the same of you, how do you skate so effortlessly?”
He smiled for a moment before answering, “I guess it’s the same. I just get on the ice and go. The moment I lace my skates up and I hit the ice everything else just fades away, it’s just me, my stick and the puck.”
“For me, I pick up the pen, or brush and just start somewhere and get lost in it. It’s me, the brush and the canvas,” you finished.
“Hey,” he was serious now, that caught your attention fully as you looked at him, “I wanted to apologise for what I said the other day…”
“Bucky,” you reached out and placed your smaller hand on his gently as you cut him off, “stop, it’s okay. We both said things that weren’t very nice. For what it’s worth.” You looked into his eyes sincerely, “I’m sorry too. It’s behind us now.”
He smiled and nodded, “okay Doodle.”
That conversation was the catalyst to your developing and lively friendship with Bucky, when the team wasn’t travelling for the away games over the next week he would sit in the art room and do his homework while you worked on the art projects you had due.
It was Thursday night, Bucky was just getting to the art studio after practice when he saw you hunched over your sketch pad, your hands in your hair and you were sniffling. He entered and quickly threw his gym bag down and came around the table and crouched down next to you. He placed his hand on your forearm, trying not to startle you too much. You jumped anyway since you didn’t hear him come in, you were too wrapped up in your own thoughts to notice anything else.
“Doodle,” he said softly. “Everything okay?” You shook your head and slumped into his chest, that caught him off guard, he quickly wrapped his arms around you and hugged you back as you cried into his chest. As quickly as you collapsed into him you pulled back and shook your head.
“I’m sorry,” you blurted out and placed your head in your hands. Bucky was a little stunned at how quickly your demeanour changed.
“It's okay,” he stood and took his usual seat across from you. “Wanna talk about it?” You let out an exaggerated sigh and sniffled loudly.
“My art professor is a bitch,” you groaned. “And I have a bunch more projects due and she’s just awful. If I didn’t need this course to graduate I would have dropped it.” You pressed your cheek against the table and closed your eyes.
“What did she do?” Bucky asked.
“After class she decided to tell me she doesn’t know why I bother trying, and that the school was foolish to offer, a no talent, wannabe one of the only full ride scholarships offered for the arts,” you were crying again. You had spent years honing your craft, and fought tooth and nail for the scholarship that allowed you to attend school here.
“She’s probably just jealous,” you laughed at that, Nat had said the same thing when you texted her earlier about what happened.
“I have an appointment with the head of the department tomorrow afternoon. This isn’t the first time she’s been awful to me,” you didn’t see his fist clench and the momentary anger flash across his face as you said that.
“I wouldn’t listen to her Doodle,” Bucky reached across the table and patted your arm gently. “Your art is awesome, and you’re incredibly talented,” he finished. You smiled against the table and lifted your head up to send him a thankful look.
“Thanks Bucky, that means a lot,” you sighed and whipped your eyes with the back of your hand and rolled your shoulders. “I got some stuff done on your portrait,” you said, your voice still a little coarse, but you felt a lot better. His face lit and his full attention was on the covered canvas behind you. You stood and pulled the cover off and showed him, you had some of the out lining done, the positioning and scale perfect. You felt very proud of it so far.
“Holy shit Doodle,” Bucky stood and got closer to admire the outlining. “You know, once this is done, you should get them to let you display it in the sports annex,” he had a smug tone as he said this. You chuckled and rolled your eyes.
“Maybe if you bat your eyelashes at the department head, and ask him really nicely, he’ll let me,” you bumped your hip into his and smirked up at him. He smiled down at you and the softness in his eye made your heart skip a beat, you quickly cleared your throat and moved from him to grab a pencil.
“I’m going to work my homework, and stay out of your way,” Bucky said softly as he moved from your side to sit down again. You smiled looking down at your feet before you started to do some more outlining.
His eyes would shift from his homework every so often and they would rove over your body. He knew he didn’t have a shot in hell at getting you to agree to sleeping with him, you made that clear and he was really trying to make sure he kept that at the forefront of his mind when he was around you because he really did want to be friends with you.
But those leggings you wore hugged the curve of your ass so perfectly it was making it difficult. He felt his mouth dry out a little as he watched you rock from side to side as you drew on the canvas, and he involuntarily let a low whistle when you stretched up and exposed some of the soft skin of your back.
You immediately turned and looked at him with a raised brow and squinted at him, full judgement. “Barnes,” you were warning him, he raised his hands up in surrender.
“Not my fault you look amazing, it's a crime,” he defended himself with a cocky tone. You couldn’t stop the blush that crawled up your neck and on to your cheeks.
“You’re insufferable,” you groaned, turning your back to him again, the blush still strong on your cheeks. He laughed loudly, before going back to his homework. You couldn’t keep the little smile off your face, you knew he used that line on countless girls, and it was probably a line he used often to get in their pants, but damn he was such a smooth talker, and he said all the right things in the right tones. You hated that you longed for his compliments.
It was quiet for a while longer, just the sounds of pencils on paper and canvas filling the air.
“Hey Doodle,” you hummed in response, not wanting to look away. “There is a final game just before playoffs, it's here, do you think you’ll come?”
“I thought Nat said you guys were done with the home games now,” you still didn’t look at him, trying to make sure your scale was correct.
“This one isn’t a regular season game, but I think you’ll really enjoy it,” he was being incredibly cryptic about whatever it is. You turned now, and raised an eyebrow at him.
“Then what is it?” You asked as you eyed him.
“Surprise, but I promise you’ll love it,” he sounded so earnest that you couldn’t help but believe him.
“Okay,” I chuckled. “I’ll go,” you relented, trying to hide your genuine excitement.

People were leaving, they were talking excitedly about what they just witnessed as if it was entertaining. For you the high pitched ringing in your ears wouldn’t let up and you couldn’t tear your eyes from the scene in front of you. The medical team led Bucky off the ice, pressing a cloth to his nose to stem the bleeding. You didn’t register Nat pulling your arm toward the locker room because you couldn’t take your eyes off the puddle of blood solidifying to the ice.
“Hello, hello,” Nat waved her hand in front of your face, your eyes focused back in suddenly, and the ringing in your ears stopped as well. You shook your head and blinked a couple times to clear your swirling thoughts. You looked at her with wide eyes, she gave you a sympathetic smile back. “You good?” She asked and you nodded, she was studying your face before determining you were actually okay, and over the momentary shock.
“I’m fine,” your head snapped toward Bucky’s voice as he shooed a medical examiner off. “Doodle?” He looked around, over the sea of people in the hallway. “Doodle,” he caught your eyes and smiled. He swaggered over to you instantly, a cocky grin plastered on his face. He had a couple steri-strips on the bridge of his nose and his knuckles were wrapped in gauze.
You raised an eyebrow at him and crossed your arms over your chest as he sauntered over, a look of disbelief on your face.
“What did you think?” He asked with a smile on his face. Taken back by his question you didn’t answer right away.
“What did I think of what?” You asked bewildered. He tilted his head and stared down at you with a “are you kidding” expression.
“The fight? What did I think of that unnecessary amount of violence and display of barbarism?” You questioned, your voice raising a couple notches by the end of the sentence. He couldn’t be serious, could he? He was.
“It wasn’t unnecessary violence,” Barnes sounded taken back, almost offended by your statement. You raised both eyebrows now and looked up at him, your hip cocked to the side and the exasperation evident on your face.
“Then what in pray tell would you call it?” You asked, your tone matching his.
“Hockey? Defending myself?” He questioned back. Your eyes widened slightly as you thought about your wording. It sounded like you were blaming him for starting the fight that was clearly started by the other team. But that didn’t excuse the excessive amount of violence displayed by two grown men.
“Defending yourself, and fucking a man up as bad as you did are two very different things,” you tapped your foot annoyed at him. He was smirking now, that confused you.
“I love when you swear Doodle,” he mused, “such a proper, pretty mouth saying such filthy things,” his hand slipped up and cupped your face as he ran his thumb over your flaming cheek. You grimaced and stepped back from him, ripping his hand from your face instantly.
“God you’re disgusting,” you said with a clipped tone, you turned away from him to try and calm your flaming cheeks. “I’m glad you’re okay, you oaf, but I need to go now.” You started walking away from him, his big hand gripped your upper arm and tugged you back.
“Oh come on Doodle, I meant no offence,” he had a slight almost desperate sounding whine in his tone. “What do you mean leaving? There’s a party to celebrate the win!” He said enthusiastically.
“Well whether you meant offence or not is neither here nor there. What you said was crude and uncalled for,” you said firmly. You pulled your arm from his grasp, “and I don’t do parties.,” you said firmly. “Also, I told you, I’m not interested in anything outside getting my project done. I’m sure you’ll find someone at the party with a pretty mouth to do whatever you want,” you spat at him. You turned fully, your face set in nasty scowl and you marched out of the arena, ignoring him as he called after you.
You didn’t see him for a week after that. Not because you were avoiding him, maybe you were avoiding him, but the team had a few away games and classes got in the way. Most of your free time was now devoted to being hauled up in one of the art studios in front of a huge canvas you were using to do your project. As well as completing other small projects for other classes. At this point you really didn’t need to see Barnes in person anyway you had a decent amount of sketches from your few trips to the arena.
It was the night before the last home game of regular season, Nat had informed you Barnes had been looking for you during practice, even to the point of deliberately asking her where you were lately. After tomorrow night's game it was 4 away games and then playoffs. Your project was due in 6 weeks, at the end of the semester. You also had to submit your progress sketches and show off the beginnings of the final project next week. So you were trying to have something done and you couldn’t waste another canvas because you couldn’t get the placement right, or the pose right, that was mainly because you didn’t actually know what pose you wanted.
With an exasperated groan you threw your head back, closing your eyes and taking a few deep inhales through your nose. You were so focused on trying to recenter yourself you didn’t hear the art room door open and close followed by heavy footfalls.
“Doodle!” You screamed when you felt his hand touch your shoulder and his voice echo through the art studio.
“Holy shit Barnes,” you squealed, placing your hand over your pounding heart to try and soothe it, “you scared me.”
“Ouch,” he shook his head to stop the slight ringing in his ears from your scream. “I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said quickly. “I was looking for you, figured the art rooms would be a good place to start.”
“Good deduction skills Barnes,” you said in an exasperated tone. “I’m surprised the FBI hasn’t come to recruit you yet,” your eyebrow raised as you looked at him.
“You haven’t been to practise all week,” he said quietly, his tone was different from his usual cock sure one. “You haven’t been avoiding me have you?” He asked, his usual teasing lit was back now.
“Nope, just didn’t need to see you in person,” you patted the sketch book laying up on a book stand. “Have everything I need in here,” you smiled up at him.
He looked dejected almost, like he was upset you hadn’t been at the rink, he rubbed his neck awkwardly before stopping and straightening up. “I see. So you won’t be at the game tomorrow?”
You shrugged, flipping the sketch book closed and gathering your supplies, “I don’t know. Don’t really need to,” you said as you walked around the studio putting things away, Bucky followed the best he could.
“Ah come on Doodle,” he whined. “Watching is part of the fun.”
“I guess so?” You said with a question. “I don’t find sports that interesting,” you said nonchalantly as you made it back to the door, opening it up and waiting for Bucky to get the hint. He quickly scurried out of the room and you closed and locked the door.
“But you find all that interesting?” He asked, unconvinced. “Or do you enjoy getting high off paint fumes?” You clenched your jaw to stop the scathing remark from coming out, but he struck a nerve at this point.
As calmly as you could you spoke, “not all of us get to be here because we can throw our fists around and shoot hard rudder at nets, Barnes. Some of us actually had to work hard for our full rides.”
“I work hard. I didn’t get where I am because I can ‘throw my fists around,’” he snapped. You stopped and turned to look at him, arms crossing over your chest waiting for him to continue. “I had to show I was worth it, talent scouts, practising. You know, hard manual work, not just waving a brush on some canvas and batting my eyelashes to get in.”
You were seething at this point, but refused to let yourself sink to yelling, or cussing him out. “I’m not having this conversation. The amount of work I put into my portfolio to be here isn’t going to be belittled by an overgrown toddler that skates with a stick in his hand for a living, someone who could care less about anything but a fucking hockey puck and some cold pussy afterwards.”
“Is that what you think?” He asked, you couldn’t quite tell if he was genuinely asking or challenging you.
“It doesn’t matter what I think. I’m done. Have a good night Barnes,” you gave up, you didn’t want to fight or yell. You also really didn’t have the mental energy to go through Barnes' personality with a fine tooth comb to find the desirable parts of him that had to be buried in there somewhere. You left the art annex with him hot on your heels calling after you.
“Hey,” he grabbed your shoulder to make you stop. “I’m not done. You don’t get to decide what I am.”
“Let go Barnes,” you struggled with his grip, it wasn’t hard or painful by any means, just firm.
“No, you’re avoiding me. Why?” He questioned.
“I'm not avoiding you Barnes, I have projects and deadlines to meet. Because contrary to popular belief you don’t occupy every female brain on the campus.” You snapped.
“Come on Doodle, I didn’t mean it like that,” he said, his cocky demeanour back. “I just wanna get to know you. Be friends,” he didn’t even sound sure about that when he said it, and you couldn’t help but laugh.
“You and I both know what you actually want and it’s not fucking happening. I’m not interested, I’m doing this project and hopefully we’ll never have to be around each other again,” you shook your shoulder again. “And would you please let me go,” you said in a very annoyed tone.
You hadn’t heard Loki come up behind you two, your conversation quiet although heated, Barnes grip loosened slightly as he stared at you in disbelief, “she said let her go Barnes,” Loki’s silky voice said sternly.
“Whatever,” Barnes' hand dropped from your shoulder and he grumbled under his breath. “If you want to come watch the game tomorrow, the seat is reserved for you,” he said as he walked away.
“Are you alright darling?” Loki asked as you turned to face him, moving your shoulder a little, Bucky’s grip wasn’t painful and you couldn’t get your heart to stop pitter pattering.
“I’m fine,” you muttered. The rage in your eyes dying. “He’s just…” you trailed off.
“Insufferable? Annoying? There’s many synonyms for him,” Loki mused. You gave him a smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes. Loki frowned at that, “what is it darling?” He wrapped his arm loosely around your shoulders as you walked toward his car.
“I don’t know. Just something I can’t really articulate properly. He’s so many things but there’s something there. Hiding, like he’s afraid to express it,” you said softly as you leaned into his side. “Maybe I’m reading into it and he’s actually just an insufferable prick, but I can’t help but think there’s more to him,” you mumbled thoughtfully, looking up at Loki, he held a thoughtful expression as he looked ahead.
“Maybe darling, you never know,” he responded quietly. The air was thick with tension, and you couldn’t quite wrap your head around your opinions on Barnes. On the surface he was cocky, arrogant, and down right crude. But sometimes, when he was skating and you could see his eyes there was a peaceful, care free expression. When he looked at you, just below the surface there was something akin to admiration and thoughtfulness. I’m definitely reading into this you thought to yourself as you slid into the passenger seat of Loki’s car.
~The next day~
You found yourself pulling on a sweater over your T-shirt before leaving your room and pulling on some shoes, with a hat tucked under your arm but no sketchbook this time.
“Where are you off too? The Arctic?” Wanda mused from the kitchen.
“The rink,” you muttered back, securing your laces.
“Where's your sketch pad?” She asked softly, while stirring her dinner. It smelled delicious.
“In my room, I’m going to get some videos of Barnes’ skating and maybe actually try and understand the game,” Wanda gave you a questioning look, before she smiled and looked down. “What?”
“Nothing, it seems you’re enthralled,” her voice light, “it’s like Hela all over again,” she chuckled. Your cheeks heated up a little, but unlike Hela you were garnering a small crush on Barnes. It was annoying and uncalled for, and damn your brain for having a thing for blue eyes and brown hair.
“Once this project is over, all will be right,” you said, not fully believing yourself at this moment and you were sure she didn’t either.
“Be careful,” she sounded so soft and motherly, she didn’t convey any malice or harm, just genuine care for you. Those two words conveyed much more than just a simple sentiment. You knew that you had to be careful, men like Barnes were usually nothing but trouble, players, womanisers. But for some reason whenever he looked in your direction, whenever he spoke to you, your heart rate sped up and your stomach did somersaults.
When you sat down in the chair that was reserved for you Nat joined you a moment later, the arena starting to fill nicely.
“I didn't expect to see you here today,” she smiled at Clint as he skated by for warm ups. “Clint said Barnes was in a mood all day, and during practice.” She side eyed you “you wouldn’t have anything to do with it?”
You groaned and leaned your head back, “we got into a small disagreement last night, after you told him where to find me.”
“Ah, I told him to check the art rooms, he had been dogging me all week about why you weren’t here,” Nat responded.
“I probably said somethings that were cruel because he got under my skin,” you sighed and rubbed your brow. “I don’t know why, but he brings out the worst in me. And I‘m starting to think it’s just me and I’m being unfair to him.”
“Nah he probably deserved it, not many will put him in his place. The last one was his girlfriend in first year, they had been dating for a couple years and she kept him in line. She left him to move away with her family to Alaska,” Nat said casually. That definitely made a little more sense. Perspective changing your perception slightly.
“Hmm,” you hummed as you watched the players skate around. Barnes and Rogers rough housing on the opposite end of the arena caught your attention. Barnes’ head turned as if he felt your eyes on him and he pushed away from Rogers and skated toward you.He came to a stop just in front of you behind the glass and smirked, you rolled your eyes in response.
“Glad to see you back at the rink,” he said cheerfully. “Need some more inspo for the project? I thought you had everything,” you picked up a slightly sour undertone in his voice. Your mouth formed a thin line as you squinted at him, not bothering to entertain his petty jab. “Whatever Doodle, enjoy the game.” He skated backwards and flashed a full tooth smile.
“I think he likes you,” Peggy said as she sat down, you groaned.
“He likes the thought of sleeping with me,” you said pointedly. Peggy laughed, she had a sing song like laugh, it was like bells. You slid further down in your seat to make yourself smaller.
“He’s usually not this persistent,” Peggy noted as she watched Steve skate by with a soft blush on her cheeks.
“He usually doesn’t have to be,” Nat chimed in.
“Oh, then I should be honoured he can’t take no for an answer? Persistence isn’t flattering. We're not 5. It's obnoxious,” your tone was flat, and unamused. Nat and Peggy’s eyes widened. “What?”
Nat laughed now, “I’m not used to you getting so heated, you’re not wrong though. I wouldn’t have given Clint a chance if he acted like Barnes.”
“From the outside it looks cuter than it actually is,” Peggy said softly, “but I see where you’re coming from.”
“Maybe if he didn’t start out with that cocky attitude, or didn’t flaunt himself all over campus as a playboy, maybe I would have given him a chance. But I’m not in the mood to be used as active release therapy and dumped,” you were sour about it, it bothered you for many reasons and the biggest most glaring reason is the stupid teeny tiny crush you may or may not have on him, and you hated it. Wanda seemed to just know but didn’t push it, and maybe Nat realised as well but chose to keep your sanity intact and not bother bringing it up. Nat just placed her hand on your shoulder and gave you an encouraging smile, she did know, and that was confirmation.
The game was not as intense as the last you watched, our team was easily winning. Whenever Barnes had a goal he made sure to skate past you and send you a wink, which would make your cheeks turn bright red. Groaning, you covered your face with your hands for what felt like the millionth time that night.
Natasha dug her elbow in your side and pointed, Barnes was skating effortlessly on a breakaway as you had learned, you pulled your phone out and filmed him. He scored and the artist in you screamed, that was the pose, he was slightly crouched, the stick extended and the puck sailed. It was beautiful, and you squealed out loud, which made Nat give you a funny look. You stared back at her, mouth slightly agape as Barnes’ had also heard you delighted squeal as he skated passed, a beautiful smile on his face. “I got the pose for my project,” you said sheepishly. Nat burst out laughing.
Your school's team unsurprisingly won the game by a landslide, and there were no fights this time, so you actually mildly, fully, enjoyed the experience. You were trailing behind Natasha and Peggy as they expertly wove in and out of the crowd to the locker room. The three of you stood waiting for the guys to finish up and come out, Clint was first, Nat walked over to him and wrapped him in a big hug, congratulating him on the win with a sweet kiss following, you couldn’t help but smile at them. A few more of the guys came out and waved and went on their way, one choosing to stop in front of you.
“Wilson, my friends call me Sam, and you must be the artist?” He smirked, offering his hand. You smiled back and took it with a short shake.
“That would be me, Wilson.”
“Oh that's cold,” you couldn’t help but chuckle at his reaction, he was laughing as well. “Buck will be out soon,” he said with a bright smile.
“You don’t get to call me that,” Barnes’ voice called out, as you watched Wilson roll his eyes.
“Steve does,” he called back.
“Yeah, I’ve known Steve longer. And he always had a plan,” Barnes retorted back as sauntered over to you. “Hey Doodle,” he flashed an award winning smile. You gave him one back, this side of him something you never saw before. And you really liked it.
“Come on man, one missed goal and suddenly I never have a plan,” Wilson was holding his stomach while he laughed.
“It’s why I’m the Captain,” Steve butted in, throwing his arm over the two men’s shoulders.
“Rogers,” you greeted. He gave you a dazzling smile, and you quickly realised why Peggy was so smitten.
“Oh please, call me Steve or Cap,” he stuck his hand out politely, you took it and shook his hand.
What you didn’t see was Nat and Clint watching the interaction with shit eating grins on their faces, and you definitely didn’t notice the picture she snapped of you smiling up at Bucky and he sending it to Loki, captioned She totally hates him XP. To which he responded Is that what they’re calling falling in love nowadays? Nat burst out laughing and they caught your attention. You looked over at her and she shot you a bright smile and patted Clint’s shoulder.
“So Doodle,” your attention was brought back to Barnes, and you smiled up at him. “What made you come to the rink? You said you had everything,” He played with the end of a strand of your hair as he spoke.
“I needed a couple videos so I could watch the movement. And I finally got the pose I wanted,” you stated happily, dancing on the balls of your feet.
“Will I get to see?” He asked, fingers still twisting the strand of hair as he smiled down at you leaning over you slightly. The pose could almost be considered intimate if you had been paying attention.
“Once it’s done,” you smiled back and scrunched your nose at him. This side of him, you could get behind. He was effortlessly flirty, but not cocky and crude.
“Come on Doodle, the muse should get to see, and I could provide some live modelling,” his voice dropped an octave and your cheeks reddened at the implication.
“And you had to ruin it,” you stepped back, putting distance between you two, breaking the heavy atmosphere that had built up. Barnes hand dropped from your hair as he huffed.
“Doodle,” you crossed your arms over your chest and looked up at him unimpressed.
“If you want to see the progress you know where to find me,” you said, moving to leave the arena and head home for the night.
“I guess you’re not coming to celebrate,” he called after you. You turned and walked backwards for a moment, waving.
“See you Barnes, night everyone,” you turned and walked out of the arena into the night. The breeze cool as spring slipped into place over the college town you called home.

“I don’t know what to do,” you groaned as you threw your head back against the worn couch.
“I want the project to focus on movement, but lifelike movement. Human movement.” You mocked your professor. It not being nature themed had to be a jab just for you. All your projects were nature related or still motion.
“Professor Grace wasn’t targeting you,” Wanda said, letting out a chuckle at your dramatics.
“Are you sure you’re not a drama major?” Pietro laughed as he threw a butter packet at you.
“You two are the worst,” you sighed as you threw your arm over your eyes. Twins, why did my best friends have to be twins. The world is cruel, your thoughts drift.
“Why don’t you come to the track and draw me?” Pietro wiggled his eyebrows at you. You rolled your eyes in response.
“Eh,” you sighed. You didn’t want a solution at the moment. You just wanted to complain.
“She just wants to vent guys,” Natasha said as she came through the door holding a couple bags of takeout and a box of wine. “And I doubt she wants to see you and the rest of the track team in those tiny little running shorts you call clothing,” she sassed at Pietro. He just laughed, and stuck a pose with his leg up on the bar stool next to the island counter causing you all to laugh with him.
“Thank you,” you exclaimed as she handed you your food. You threw a 10 at her and settled back down into the couch.
“You know, you could come by the rink and draw a couple of the guys,” Nat mentioned. Her long term boyfriend was on the hockey team, Clint, a sharpshooting winger nicknamed Hawkeye.
“Pfft,” you scoffed. “I’m not going to have them think I’m one of those, puck kitties, or whatever they’re called.”
“Puck bunny,” Wanda chimed in, you pointed your chopstick at her and smiled.
Natasha let out a loud laugh, one of those full bodied ones, “god they won’t think that.” You raised your eyebrow at her and gave her an incredulous look.
“I can’t have them showing off because I’m there. I need to get them in their element. Not focused on what I’m doing,” you groaned again. “Biggest issue is I will need permission from the person or people. So they’ll have to know.”
“Like I said Princessa, draw me. You have my permission,” Pietro winked, you rolled your eyes at him.
“You’re too obvious of a choice. And as much as Wanda insists that Professor Grace doesn’t have a personal vendetta against me, she’ll love pointing out I picked the safe option,” you whined.
“Wanda, you haven’t seen Grace in class. She will take any chance to criticize her pieces. Nitpicking to the extreme.” Natasha chimed in, “if it wasn’t for Dr. Rain I think our resident artist would've failed out of this course by now.” Dr. Rain was the head of the art department and after a wholly undergraded piece you submitted last semester Prof. Grace was on thin ice. So she graded you fairly but took every chance to tear you apart in front of the class.
“I’ll think about the hockey team. It would be the least expected from me anyway,” you signed and got up from the couch taking everyone’s garbage and throwing it out. Football season was over, but the hockey season was in full swing right now and our team was top of the league.
“They have practice tomorrow night, you should come by and look at it,” Nat said, giving you a knowing look.
~The Next Day~
That's how you ended up in the rink. Underdressed because you didn’t realize how cold an ice rink would be in the stands. You were right though, about the type of girls that hung out there, they were scantily dressed and leaning over the tunnel that the players exited and entered from. How they weren’t frozen baffled you.
Nat was sitting reading a chemistry book across from you near the bench, as you didn’t want the team knowing you knew her. Well everyone but Clint. You’ve hung out quite a few times over the past couple years. You took a seat a few rows up opposite the bench near what Nat called the Sin bin (penalty box.) It gave an excellent undisrupted view of the rink and the players as they practiced.
The sounds of skates gliding over fresh ice and sticks bouncing off it was an almost soothing sound. The puck skittered across the ice as it was passed between teammates and shot toward the empty net. The goalie, a guy named Quill, was performing some kind of ritual at the opposite end of the rink. Nat mentioned he was a bit of an odd duck. But according to her all goalies were odd in their own ways.
The movement was fluid and easy to follow. How these giant men moved so weightlessly across the ice left you in awe. The Captain of the team was a blonde center named Steve Rogers, better known as Cap. Most of the school knew him, he was in a few of your art classes over the semesters. His girlfriend Peggy, was the student union president.
The star of the team was his blurry best friend James “Bucky” Barnes. He was a “winger,” with good prospects for the NHL according to Nat as she gave you a lowdown of the team as you guys went there just after practice started. He was nicknamed the White Wolf. How a man of his size moved that easily was mesmerizing, he almost floated over the ice and it looked like he was dancing. He was sinfully handsome as well. Every other week he had a new girl hanging off his arm. Undoubtedly one of those puck bunnies as they were called. He was the talk of the school after the football season concluded.
It made you dislike him on principle. The sports were definitely more priority in the school and the art department lacked thanks to these overgrown toddlers on skates. But you couldn’t deny his natural handsomeness, he looked effortlessly handsome and it was almost unfair.
You looked down at your sketch pad that you had been absently scratching at. Bucky seemed to be your muse because you couldn’t take your eyes off him as he effortlessly skated around the rink. You were in danger and you knew it. You gulped and closed the book before quickly gathering your things and leaving.
It didn’t take Nat long to text you and ask where you went. You sent her a quick message back saying you were cold. Not that Bucky, the school's playboy, had quickly become the muse of your piece.
“Nat, I thought you said your friend was coming by,” Clint asked as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“She did, she left because she was cold,” Nat chuckled.
“Anyone know the pretty one watching by the sin bin?” She overheard Wilson ask. “And what she was doing?”
“I think I was in a couple art classes with her,” Steve mentioned missing your name.
“I won’t complain if she comes by again,” Barnes said. Wilson raised a brow at him.
“What, so you can break her heart well?”
“Look doll, it’s not you,”
“It’s me.” Wilson and Stark said together. Barnes shot both men a glare. Then the high pitched whine of Barnes newest fling squealed his name and that was Clint and Nat’s queue to hightail it out of there. The collective groans from the rest of the team matched her thoughts.
~A couple days later~
“Loki, I don’t know what I’m going to do, this project is worth too much for me to go safe,” you sighed as you laid your head on his lap. He was reading some classic novel for his English class in the student commons. His fingers nimbly moved through your hair as he held the book in the other hand.
“Darling, just go back to the ice rink,” he knew almost immediately when something was up when you were walking together a couple days later. The perspective bastard. Loki was your best friend since middle school, his brother Thor was the star quarterback for the football team in both high school and here.
“Why would I do that,” you pouted.
“Because you clearly want to draw this man, and it will ruin you for months just like that piece you did of Helena,” he said shortly. Helena or Hela was his big sister and she was absolutely stunning. You had pined over drawing her for a piece for months before Loki forced you to ask her. It fixed everything and life back to normal after you painted the piece.
“I hate when you do that,” you whined, his eyes flicking down to your face.
“Hate what darling,” he mused.
“That, being reasonable and knowing what I need before I admit what I need to do.” He laughed and ruffled your hair affectionately.
“Comes with years of experience,” he sighed and placed his book down next to his leg. “Do bundle up this time will you,” he called as you walked away, you quickly flipped him the bird as you rounded the corner.
And there you were back at the rink again. Although tonight was a game night and the rink was packed. “20 dollars,” a nasally boy said as he pushed his glasses up, he looked bored out of his mind.
“Pardon?” You asked, looking at him.
“It’s 20 dollars to get in the game,” he said in an annoyed tone.
“Oh, I’m a student,” you showed your ID card, he rolled his eyes, “5 dollars.” You nodded and placed the five down. Only partners of the team got in free. Perk of fucking one of the team members you guessed, that must have outweighed the fear of them cheating or getting bored. You knew that wasn’t fair. At least two of the guys were in committed relationships and one was in an on again off again relationship. The rest though you weren’t sure, you shock your head at the thought.
You caught the flaming red hair of Nat in her reserved seat next to the bench, Peggy was next to her. There were a few open seats at the top of the rink, not great from getting a good view of what you needed to draw. But it would have to do. Instantly your eyes were drawn to Barnes, number 17, flying up the ice leaving the opposing team in the dust, snow? With a quick flick of his wrist the puck was shot sideways and Barton scored. The crowd stood and cheered loudly. You wished you had ear plugs now. The buzzer was insanely loud and made your ears ring. How Nat enjoyed this you’d never understand. Barton. You thought, Nat wasn’t big on sports, but she was big on her sweet boyfriend.
You focused on Barnes as he showboated around the rink, celebrating his assist. He moved so fluidly, you were mesmerized. You drew many little pieces focusing on the movement trying to capture the effortlessness of him skating. You were startled from your drawing when the buzzer screeched again the crowd roared in applause. The team scored again and it seemed to be Barnes that scored this time. Hats flew onto the ice as he skated around. That was odd, you squinted at the action. His eyes caught yours for a split second as he rushed past and it felt like eternity.

Catch up here: Chapter 1 Chapter 2 ❤️
“You think I can just say fuck it and drop out?” The words tumbled out of your mouth quickly as you walked with Nat toward the arena. Practice was in the afternoon today because there was a game tonight. According to Nat our rival team would be here later to do some warm up before the game tonight.
“Seriously?” She raised a manicured brow at you.
“Maybe Pietro was right. I should be a drama major,” you whispered, mostly to yourself. You knew you were being over dramatic about the ordeal, but Barnes was an egotistical jerk and he was going to make this project hell. Was that a pessimistic take on it? Maybe. Were you wrong? Probably not.
You pulled your school hoodie tighter, winter's grasp was holding on tight this year. The wind nipped at your nose and cheeks as you both made your way into the arena. Once inside the main doors heat blasted at you, you rubbed your arms with your hands and looked at Nat who was doing the same.
“You are dramatic. But it’s gonna be fine,” her confidence almost made you believe her. Originally you were just going to wait and ask him outside the arena, in hopes maybe his cocky, surefire attitude would be on the back burner. But Nat said practice was amping up now as the season drew closer to playoffs and the team would be traveling a lot more. Nat led us to our seats next to the bench, another woman was sitting there already.
“Peggy!” Nat said cheerfully, as she sat down next to her.
“Natasha!” she said cheerfully back. “Who’s this?” She smiled at you. You waved and introduced yourself.
“Oh you’re the one doing the art project? Steve mentioned it,” she asked.
You nodded, “news travels fast?” you laugh a little weirded out how she already knew.
“Hockey players gossip worse than fishermen wives in the locker room...”
“And out of it,” Nat added with a laugh, Peggy chuckled as well.
“And Barnes can’t shut up about the fact you drew him,” Peggy said with an eyeroll. Right, you thought. Peggy probably spent a decent time around him, since Steve and him were best friends, from your understanding it was rare to see one without the other.
“I’m not surprised,” you chuckled, looking down at your sketchpad. The night before you stayed up and watched videos of Barnes’ best plays and a couple of his interviews. There were some very detailed pictures of his face there. You quickly turned to a black page so Nat wouldn’t see it and poke fun. When you found a muse, it was hard for you to focus on anything but it. You could feel the hole you were digging getting bigger and bigger.
“Fuck,” you glared at Barnes as he slammed into the glass in front of you, startling you. He had his helmet lifted and he was giving you a bright and flirty smile. You raised an eyebrow at him and shook your head, uninterested in his antics. He slipped his helmet down and pushed back, skating backwards, he moved so fluidly, you couldn’t help but pay attention.
“Oi! Barnes. Pay attention,” someone snapped, you looked towards the voice and stared for a moment.
“Coach Fury,” Nat said to you, “the only person that can get Barnes to pay attention besides Steve,” she finished. You nodded before looking back at the players. Your eyes were drawn to a smaller player, he wore a 12 on his back, Stark. He had been in one of your business classes you took in your second semester. He was an interesting guy, cocky and arrogant, he also came from money. His father was the owner of Stark Industries. He was speeding up and down the ice with ease.
“12, he's fast,” you murmured to Nat, who nodded.
“He broke a record last year, his size makes it easier for him to zoom around,” Nat answered as she looked down at my paper, “Barnes really has your eye doesn’t he, this is like the Hela thing all over again,” she chuckled.
“Yeah,” you blushed deeply and looked back down at your paper. You really wished one of the other teammates caught your attention, if Clint did this would be much simpler. But of of course the school hot shot had to be one to catch your eye.
“Hey,” Nat lifted your chin and made you look at her. “It’s fine, muses come and go. That’s how art is,” she smiled, that was one thing you loved about Nat, she never questioned or made fun of your muses or how ridiculous an idea you had was when it came to your art. She would poke fun, and make silly jokes, but nothing harmful. Just good natured fun. Her support was unwavering and true.
Nat was a dancer, she was studying dance and dance theory. That’s how you two met, you accidently stumbled into one of the dance studios after hours instead of the art room. She was there practicing, and made small talk with you. You ended up just sitting on the dance room floor and working on your project talking with her as she practiced.
“You know what’s funny, I didn’t think about dance for this project,” you chuckled after you relaxed a little. Nat’s face broke into a wide smile.
“It would be the same as Pietro and the track team, but at least we look cute in our dance attire,” she mused lightly. You laughed loudly at her comment.
“You really hate those track uniforms,” you shook your head as you chuckled some more. Clint zipped passed a moment later and Nat‘s eye followed him like a magnet. “Goodness, you’re so in love, it’s sickening,” you mused, she pushed your shoulder playfully.
“How long have you two known one another?” Peggy asked.
“Since first semester,” you answered her with a smile.
“You guys are such good friends, I would have expected childhood bestfriends,” Peggy said, as she smiled at Steve who skated by.
“We just clicked,” you shrugged, returning to your sketchpad.
Practice drew to a close a little while later and you followed behind Nat and Peggy as they made their way back toward the locker room. There were a few girls, including Pepper Potts, Starks on again/off again girlfriend. Every other week Nat would be talking about it. The girl Bucky had on his arm last time was missing from the group of girls waiting for the players to leave the locker room. First out was Clint, and he made a beeline for Nat, instantly pulling her into a hug and pressing his nose into her neck, she squealed a little as his cold nose made contact with her skin.
Peggy excused herself to go wait by the door for Steve who emerged with Barnes a moment later. She whispered something in Steve’s ear and pointed over at you with a smile. Steve nodded and waved with a small smile of his own. Barnes followed his gaze and instantly he perked up when he noticed you. He swaggered toward you, past the gaggle of girls waiting to try and get his attention, you noticed a couple of them glare in your direction. You stood with your arms crossed over your chest, sketch book tucked against your side. You looked up at him as he came up to you making a complete stop a foot in front of you. He really didn’t care about personal space, you took one step back so you didn't have to crane your neck as much to look him in the face.
“And what do I owe the pleasure today Doodle,” you cocked an eyebrow at the nickname, and squinted slightly. The nickname didn’t make you scrunch your nose or want to gag so it wasn’t the worst. You sighed heavily and danced on the balls of your feet for a moment. He just stared, watching you intently, a dumb cocky smirk plastered on his face.
“Would you let me draw you for my art project?” You asked, you wished the weight bearing down on your shoulders lifted but it didn’t. You dreaded the thought of spending more time with this menace of a man. His lip twitched further upward and showed some of his perfect white teeth.
“Ah Doodle, I thought you'd never ask,” he ruffled your hair with one of his big hands. You groaned and moved your head from him and tried to fix your hair.
“Don’t touch me, please,” you said sternly. “I just need permission to draw you and use your likeness.”
“Ah don’t be like that,” he moved forward and you stepped backwards and to the right, dodging him. He huffed in annoyance and you stared at him with your arms crossed again and slight scowl. “Will you be at the game tonight?” He asked, finally standing upright, his own arms crossed across his broad chest.
“Seats are sold out besides the reserved seats for team partners,” you stated, “so no not tonight.”
“There's always a seat reserved for my girl, you can have that one,” he stated matter of factly.
“I’m not your girl,” you said back firmly. “This whole thing is for my art project,” you moved your hand jestering to both of you, “it ends once my project is done.”
You couldn’t quite place the look on his face after you said that, but you could pick up the small look of challenge in his eyes. It seemed he was making this game, like he was contemplating how long it would be before you would cave and give him what he wanted. Another notch in his bed post. From what you could tell based on his body language alone he was not used to being rejected. Women usually flaunted over him and fell in his lap, all he had to do was choose who he wanted at that moment. Your determination to not be one of those girls was considered a challenge to him, met head on with stubborn determination to break you down and get what he wanted in the end. That made your stomach twist at the thought, he only wanted to do this to sleep with you, have some fun and then dump you off on Loki’s lap heart broken.
You shook your head, lost in your own thoughts. Barnes was still looking at you, a contemplative look on his face. He had his chin in his hand as he rubbed it, “this will be fun, see you tonight Doodle.” You glared at him as he walked away, twirling his keys around his finger.
“Jerk,” you said softly to yourself before you made your way over to Nat and Clint.
“Well that went better than I expected,” Nat said quietly as the three of you left the rink until you had to be back later.
A sleek black car was parked at the curb, you waved goodbye to Nat and Clint as you ran over to the car and slid into the passenger seat, you rolled the window down and shouted “goodbye! See you later,” Nat waved and they continued walking.
“Hey Loki!” You said cheerfully.
“Hello darling, I take it asking Barnes went well?” He asked as he put the car in drive and pulled out from the curb.
“It went alright. The cocky bastard,” you clipped your belt in place and turned your head to look at Loki fully. “He’s already flirting with me,” you shook your head in annoyance.
“At least he has good taste darling,” Loki said sweetly as we sped down the freeway into town to have an early dinner.
“Have fun darling,” Loki shouted out the open window of the car as he dropped you off at the arena. You turned back and gave him an unamused smile and flipped him off.
“Yeah, fuck you,” you said with a slight laugh and turned away, waving, “love you dork,” you said over your shoulder. Nat was waiting just inside the arena for you and led you to your seats.
“So one of the perks of dating hockey players? Free seats?” You mused sitting down next to her, the arena was still pretty empty as the game didn’t start for 45 minutes.
“One of them,” she chuckled. Warm ups started and Clint stopped for a moment in front of us and lifted his helmet.
“Hey girls,” he said with a smile before darting off to warm up.
“Looks like Barnes just noticed us,” Nat said as he skated over.
“He had me clocked from the parking lot,” you grumbled. Nat laughed loudly and placed her hand on your shoulder wiping a tear from her eye.
“You’re not wrong,” she said between giggles. Barnes skated forward and came to stop sending glittering flecks of shaved ice toward the glass.
“Nat, Doodle, how's my new favourite girl?” He asked with a cocky smile. You rolled your eyes, and placed your cheek on your hand as you looked at him with a deadpan expression, Nat smirked next to you. You watched as Barnes ran his tongue over his teeth, he then winked and skated off to join warm ups.
“Do the woman he dates actually like that attitude?” You mused absently as you doodled on the open page of your sketchbook. Nat shrugged.
“Honestly, they’re probably more interested in his looks, and don’t care about anything else. That or the potential paycheck he’ll be earning if they can tie him down long enough,” She said softly. Your gut twisted uncomfortably at that, and you grimaced. Sure the guy was an arrogant prick, but he deserved better than that. Nat noticed your facial expression and nodded. “It’s not really fair, there's moments when he’s more than the arrogant show off, he’s pretty sweet. I think he’s just gotten used to hiding it; he doesn't bother being anything else.”
“Be what they expect of you and no one will question it,” you hummed. You mindless doodles turned into a simple sketch of his face. You admired the sharpness of his jaw, his mouth set in a soft line that was slightly upturned.
The game started, and you were too focused on watching Barnes skate to really watch the game. Not that you really understood the sport enough to really understand what was happening in front of you. First intermission passed and they were half through the second period when a black punk landed on your sketch pad. It startled you and your head shot up and you meant Barnes eyes. Nat was giggling next to you as you picked the offending puck up and handed it to the kid sitting behind you, who happened to be wearing a Barnes jersey. The kids day was made and Barnes’ narrowed his eyes at you. You smirked back in return and went back to drawing.
The crowd erupted in loud chants as Barnes scored with less than a second left in the third period, winning the game for your college. You watched as Barnes skated around celebrating his goal only for the captain of the other team to get up in his face. You tensed up as you watched the guy push Barnes shoulders and then grab his protective gear getting in his face.
So the rest of the team came to investigate and there was an all out brawl on the ice right in front of you. You stood up and looked down. Barnes was on top of the captain, his fist raised and he was breathing heavily.
“Bucky,” his name left your lips before you could stop it and he had to have heard you because his face tilted in your direction for a fraction of a second and the captain took that as an opportunity to flip Barnes over and bring a hard fist down on the bridge of his nose. You shrieked as blood gushed out of Barnes’ nose. Nat was standing next to you as you both watched in horror.
You turned your head and saw your college coach hopping the bench and helping refs break it up. Steve hauled the other team's captain off his best friend and shoved him into the arms of other teammates who pulled him further away. Steve helped Barnes up and took his face in his hands, Barnes just gave him a dopey smile. His gaze turned to you for a moment and he smiled a bigger smile. You looked at him with wide eyes and your mouth agape, horrified.
The captain of the other team didn’t look like he fared much better. He was bloody and his eye was swelling shut with each passing second. Coach Fury looked pissed, and was stalking over to the other teams coach for a few words, a ref following close behind.
